Tip #1: Go With a Clean Body
Have a shower or a bath and make sure that you get your skin nice and clean for your massage. Depending on the type of massage you go for, you may end up with plenty of oil over your body so you need to make sure your skin has a clean ‘work surface for the therapist.
If you are having a full body massage, avoid shaving your legs just before you go as the oils will get into your pores quite easily and make your legs itchy – the last thing you want during a relaxing massage!
Tip #2: Comfortable Clothes
Make sure the clothes you wear are easy to get on and off (if you are required to be naked or half naked during the massage) and if not, make sure they are stretchy enough to move around in.
Wear the same kind of clothes you would to a yoga session and make sure that they don’t restrict your movement at all. A variety of massage therapy services such as the Thai massage will require you to stay clothed but be willing to allow the therapist to move your body around.
Tip #3: Stretch Your Body
A Thai massage can be quite challenging if you are not very supple. If you are going for a body-stretching massage such as the Thai style, stretching beforehand may improve your flexibility and give you more freedom of movement.
Tip #4: Get There On Time
When you are in a rush to get somewhere, your body naturally tenses up so that you may not get the full benefits of a relaxing massage. Leave home or work in plenty of time to get to your appointment and book it in on a day when you know you’re not going to be rushing such a free week night after work or at the weekend.
Tip #5: Tell the Therapist About You
If there are certain areas of your body where you experience pain, let the therapist know so that they can treat it accordingly. This may mean focusing on the area more or avoiding altogether, depending on the severity of your ailment.
Some massages may also need a lot of pressure to make them effective, but if something feels very uncomfortable, make sure you tell the therapist so that they can ease the pressure and allow you to fully relax into the massage.
